To The Editor: I hate to say I told you so. But I did. Here we go folks. It's only one month into the Ritter-O'Brien vaccinate the world warm and fuzzy feel good circus and we're already having an HPV vaccine mandate crammed down our throats despite massive opposition. I do remember a time or two during my campaign warning everyone that this is exactly what we'll get with Ritter and a Democratic regime. Not that I'm a Republican either, but four of them did vote against this bill. I keep hearing that this bill isn't really a mandate because the HPV vaccine will be voluntary. Yet, your article this morning clearly states in the very first line that the bill will be "...adding a new cervical-cancer vaccine to the list of required inoculations for schoolgirls...". So, will it be mandatory or won't it? Oh yes, I know, it's voluntary. All you do is prove you've had the vaccine or that you've been educated and are opting out. I'm sorry, the only way for HPV vaccine to be voluntary is not to mandate it. Am I the only one with common sense here? Well I've got news for everyone. All vaccines are voluntary under Colorado law. But why don't you just do a little survey and find out how many people know that? Almost never is a parent told about the philosophical exemption under Colorado law. Another warning...under Ritter's reign I wouldn't be surprised if there are efforts to take exemptions away. To Betty Boyd: mandating a pharmaceutical product is not the same as "an opportunity for education". You must be blind. To Bob Hagedorn: You are right, it isn't the Health and Morality Committee. It's the Health and Human Disservices Committee. Wake up people. This is nothing but pharma using government to mandate its product to make money. And the really super fabulous part of it all...they bear no liability. I urge all parents to fully educate themselves on this and all vaccines and know your rights.
