Flu Vaccine

This year, for the first time, the flu vaccine has been added to the list of recommended childhood vaccines starting at the age of six months and every year of life thereafter. It is also being recommended for pregnant women. (Mandating flu vaccine for school and daycare entry now seems inevitable. See our exemptions page to learn more about your right to say no to this and other vaccines).

HAPI is adamantly opposed to both of these recommendations for the following reasons:

• Most injected flu vaccine currently available contains 25 micrograms of mercury in the form of Thimerosal, a mercury compound. Children first receive one-half of the adult dose, or 12.5 micrograms of mercury, followed within a four week period by a second dose of 12.5 micrograms of mercury, for a total of 25 micrograms.

• A person would need to weigh 551 pounds to "ingest" 25 micrograms of mercury at a level "not likely to cause harm" according to EPA guidelines. There are no guidelines for the more dangerous practice of "injecting" mercury into human flesh, and the form of mercury in vaccines is ethyl-mercury, more toxic than methyl-mercury. Mercury crosses the blood-brain barrier and is especially dangerous to infants and the developing fetus.

• Flu vaccines often do not contain the circulating strain of flu virus, thereby inflicting risks with no benefits.
